Dr Jean Byrne (co-owner)
Authorised Ashtanga Yoga Teacher
B.A.Hons, Grad Dip Ed, PhD.
Jean began practising yoga at the age of 19 while completing a Bachelor of Arts in World Religions and
Philosophy. After lengthy travels in India and South East Asia studying different yoga and meditation traditions she became a student of
Ashtanga Yoga Master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and she is Authorised by him to teach the Ashtanga method. Jean has lectured in Eastern philosophy
at various Australian universities and has a PhD in Philosophy & Feminist Theory. She is a qualified primary school teacher, Childbirth
Educator, a Yoga Alliance E-RYT Member, a senior member of the Yoga Teachers Association of Australia (YTAA) and serves as a WA representative
of the National YTAA committee. She is also an Honorary Research Fellow at UWA in Women's Studies. Jean is co-editor of the book, Yoga in the
Modern World: Contemporary Perspectives (Routledge 2008) and is currently working on her second book 'Enlightenment Between Two: Luce Irigaray,
non duality and sexual difference'. She is mum to a beautiful boy, Jamie, whom she gave birth to drug and intervention free at the Birth
Centre. She is passionate about women's spirituality and the benefits of yoga for pregnancy, birth and beyond.
Rob Schütze (co-owner)
Authorised Ashtanga Yoga Teacher
B.A., B. Journ., Grad Dip Psych B.Sc(Psych) Hons.
Rob is a dedicated student and teacher of Ashtanga Yoga and is also one of the few Australians authorised by Ashtanga Yoga Master
Pattabhi Jois to carry on this precious lineage. He returns regularly to study under the guidance of Jois and his grandson, Sharath
in Mysore. While working as a journalist in Asia he visited and retreated at various Buddhist monateries and now he runs a private
counselling practice in which he integrates yoga and mindfulness meditation with traditional psychological therapies. His research
is focused on mindfulness and chronic pain and he is currently undertaking his Masters of Clinical Psychology at Curtin Univeristy
where he also works as Research Officer on a mindfulness based research project. Rob is an Associate Member of the Australian
Psychological Society and offers counselling to individuals and groups. He is also a member of the YTAA and a Yoga Therapist
registered with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Rob is dad to Jamie (aged 3).
Dr Michael (Saam) Renton
B.A. Hons, Gradp Dip Ed, PhD
Saam started doing yoga and meditation in 1991 and spent several years in Asia practicing intensively during the 90's. He has practiced a wide range of hatha yoga styles and meditation techniques, primarily Zen and Vipassanna. Saam has spent years on retreat in Thai, Malaysian and Californian Buddhist monasteries. He began teaching in 1995 and his dynamic classes incorporate yoga and meditation techniques from all of the tradtions he has stduied. He is particulay interested in the links between mindfulness meditation and hatha yoga. Currently Saam is an academic at UWA and teaches vinyasa classes at The Yoga Space. He is a Senior Member of the YTAA and has 2 children, a girl aged 4 & a boy aged 1.
Marina Boni
Marina began her practice of Ashtanga Yoga in Adelaide with David and Simi Roche. Upon relocation to Perth she began to practise in the Mysore program with Jean & Rob. Marina is a dedicated Ashtanga practitioner and in January 2008 she traveled to Mysore, India to practice under the guidance of Sri K Pattabhi Jois. She loved the experience of practicing at the source and undertook a second pilgrimage to Mysore to practice in November 2008. Along with her commitment to daily Ashtanga Yoga practice she is also a student of meditation and has completed a Hatha Yoga Teacher Training course at The Yoga Space. Marina is a member of the Yoga Teachers Association of Australia and also specialises in Yin Yoga.
Stephen Byrne
Stephen was introduced to yoga at the age of 16 and immediately felt a connection to the benefits of yoga. After some years of exploring the practice he dedicated himself to the traditional system of Ashtanga Yoga. He practiced in Mysore, India with Guruji (Pattabhi Jois) before he passed in 2009. On his 3rd and most recent trip to practice under Sharath Jois he delved deeper into the study of traditional chanting and sanskrit. Stephen is passionate about teaching ashtanga yoga in the traditional format as taught to him by his teachers, Guruji, Sharath and in Perth Jean and Rob. He also finds Yin Yoga a complement to his daily ashtanga practice. Stephen is registered with the Yoga Teachers Association of Australia.
Marie Martin
Marie Martin has been practicing yoga for 7 years and teaching for 3. She completed her Level 1 Teacher Training with Rob Schutze and Dr Jean Byrne at the Yoga Space and is proud to be the first instructor to graduate from their inaugural TT Program in November 2007. Since completing her training Marie has studied Pre and Post Natal Yoga with Ana Davies (Byron Bay Yoga School), undertaken further Pregnancy Yoga training with Jean Byrne, Doula Training (Doula Association Australia), Active Birth Education (Andrea Robertson), and Anatomy and Physiology of Asana (Classical School of Yoga). Marie has a special interest in anatomy and yoga therapy, Active Birth and Pre and Post natal care of mother and baby. Marie is pregnant with her 3rd child and has 2 daughters, Hashem 13 and Aroha 17. Marie is also the Teacher Trainee Manager for the Yoga Space and enjoys the experience of both Teaching Yoga and helping to run a busy yoga school.
Michelle Papa
Michelle has began yoga in 2004 in Los Angeles to balance out her stressful job establishing and managing her own Information Management consulting company. Through yoga she was able to connect with a part of herself that she thought she had forgotten due to the busyness of her life. Her interest in a love for yoga has grown exponentially since 2004 and upon moving to Perth in 2007 she found her 'yoga home' at The Yoga Space where she practices in the Mysore program. Michelle has undertaken the Hatha Vinyasa Yoga teacher training at The Yoga Space and has a particular interest in pre and post natal, and yoga for Active Birth. Michelle has completed specialist pre natal yoga teacher training with Dr Jean Byrne and is currently enrolled in a Diploma of Childbirth Education to become a certified Childbirth Educator with Childbirth International. She is also furthering her learning through workshops with Active Birth proponent Dr Sarah Buckley. Michelle teaches pre natal, post natal and sometimes general classes at The Yoga Space. She is mum to a baby girl, Cassy, born in early 2010.
Kelly Parslow
Kelly stumbled across yoga while working in the world of fitness. She was immediately enamoured by the practice of yoga and undertook an Ashtanga Yoga Beginners course. She practiced Ashtanga yoga and experimented with many other styles of yoga, finally returning again to Ashtanga Yoga as her daily practice. She loves the grace and beauty of the Ashtanga practice. Kelly has been teaching yoga since 2005 and has furthered her training in 2009 by undertaking the Hatha Vinyasa teacher training course at the Yoga Space. She is a committed student in the Mysore program with Jean and Rob. Kelly has also practiced with the grandson of Sri K Pattabhi Jois, Sharath Jois. For Kelly yoga has been her sanctuary and in her practice she feels like she has come home. She teaches the Ashtanga Led classes at The Yoga Space, some beginners classes and vinyasa classes.
