Who am I? A Response to the Koan ‘Woman’

Informed by Buddhist theory, this article provides a new perspective from which we can understand the problem of how to define ‘woman’. By relating Mahayana Buddhist ideas of emptiness and not-self to a definition of woman, Jean Byrne explores how the inquiry into our identity as women can become a koan which helps us to see our true nature.
