Ashtanga Yoga Retreat

After decades of practice, Ashtanga still has our hearts. The form, the simplicity, the container for growth. Whether your practice is gentle, or you like it to be strong, with wisdom Ashtanga can be a life-long ground from which you live.

This is old-school Ashtanga Yoga. No more than 14 students and 2 teachers.

When we (Rob & Jean) first learnt with Sharath Jois, there were 12-14 of us in the room. Practice was unhurried, there was time. It was the same with our first teachers, Rolf and Kirsten. The class sizes were small, we were away from day-to-day life, there were two teachers and time for meditation, pranayama, and sitting in a circle in dialogue. This retreat is an intimate setting to develop your practice, allow new questions to emerge, or even begin your Ashtanga journey.

The weekend is curated to allow for practice to unfold in an unhurried fashion and for conversation to occur to delve deep into the heart of how our practice informs our lives.

A unique opportunity to engage in a process, with a Senior Ashtanga teacher and Clinical Psychologist and reflect on the role of Ashtanga Yoga in your life.

Time to connect with other Ashtangis around a shared love of the practice.

Time to (re)commit to the journey, or time to begin – we have a few spots for those new to this method.

You will receive individual feedback and support on your practice from Senior teachers.

Accommodation:

We are staying at the Margaret River Retreat, an eco-certified venue for retreats, workshops, and weddings. The character-filled, white weatherboard enclave wraps around a circular and enclosed garden and café; there is even a glamping village! Our accommodation is in the studio and quarters rooms, not the glamping village. The majority of accommodation is twin share. Studios are a little more upmarket with a mix of different types of beds and the quarters are a little piece of history, cute rooms, with balconies and toilets outside the room off the balcony. Quarters rooms are adjacent to the yoga room. Please note the quarters rooms are set up like like old country quarters, they are well appointed, but smaller rooms, one is a cute upstairs ‘cubby’ room and bathrooms and toilets have entry from the verandah. This rooms are for a single person only and come off a shared area with the retreat yoga room entrance.

Includes: Dialogue sessions led by a Senior Clinical Psychologist, all classes, Friday & Saturday dinner, Saturday & Sunday breakfast. Time is allocated for beach/walks etc. Saturday during the day, so lunch is not provided.

Your Teachers

This retreat is led by Rob Schutze PhD and Jean Byrne PhD. Rob is a Senior Yoga teacher, researcher, and experienced Clinical Psychologist. Jean is a Senior Yoga teacher and researcher with Psychology training. Together they weave the philosophical and practical aspects of Eastern philosophy and Western science in order to help support you on your individual journey. Jean and Rob made many trips to India to study Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore, India. They stepped away from the Jois family’s teaching following #metoo and the abuses that were uncovered. They have no guru. They have a deep connection with each other, their children, a circle of friends on the path, and a daily practice that grounds them and informs their life. They endeavor to teach in a way that sparks inquiry, not authority.
