Workshop: Ashtanga Sadhana

MON APRIL 27, 9AM - 12PM

Ashtanga has a reputation for primarily being a physical practice. Yet when approached holistically, Ashtanga Yoga can be a complete system of spiritual practice, or “Sadhana”.

In this workshop, you will learn to embody the subtle elements of your Ashtanga practice to refine both the postures and your introspective awareness. Whether a new or seasoned Ashtanga yoga practitioner, this workshop will enhance your capacity to understand the subtle layers of Ashtanga Yoga. Includes pranayama, asana explorations, and time for reflection & discussion.

Limited places available. In-person ONLY.

Teacher:
Dr Jean Byrne, Senior Yoga Teacher, Yoga Therapist, provisional Psychologist, and long-term student of Sharath Jois. Jean has taught and practiced Ashtanga Yoga for 30 years.

Workshop: Ashtanga's Nadi Shodana (Second series)

SAT AUGUST 8, 9:30AM - 12:30PM

The second series of Ashtanga yoga can feel intimidating and overwhelming. Often, people commence this series ill-prepared or unaware of how the foundations for the posture of the second series are present in the Ashtanga primary series.

In this interactive workshop, you will learn about the wisdom of the second series, how to approach and modify the postures, alongside a deep appreciation of the work that can be undertaken in the primary series to support the evolution of your practice.

The workshop will traverse the first two-thirds of the second series and its relationship to the primary series. If you are familiar with half of the primary series, that is sufficient for this workshop.

Limited places available. This workshop will book out. In-person ONLY.

When and where did you learn?

Our founders Jean Byrne PhD and Rob Schutze PhD learnt Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore, India

With decades of experience in India studying asana, pranayama, chanting, and Sanskrit, Jean and Rob received Authorisation to teach Ashtanga yoga in 2005, followed by Level 2 in 2015. They have mentored numerous students and supported their journeys to deepen their practice. Together Jean and Rob helped Ashtanga Yoga flourish in Perth, Australia by encouraging their students ot make the pilgrimage to Mysore, India.

They continue to teach Ashtanga yoga in a trauma-informed and empowering way, respecting the experiences of their students and the broader community. Yoga Space's Ashtanga Program  is taught by a team of teachers Elena Pinto (Authorised Ashtanga Yoga teacher, qualified to the the Active Series), Tricia Tee and Eva Evbisawa, who are supported by Meghan, Gemma and Henry.

How our program is different

We democratised the Ashtanga Mysore room

What does that mean? We have a team of teachers who share their love of Ashtanga Yoga at The Yoga Space. They have families, work and their own practice they tend to. They are integrating this practice into life. While we uphold the form of the practice, we deeply individualise to meet each person at the stage of life they are in. We empower our students and have a dogma and guru free zone. In our Mysore program you will be met with compassion, respect and empowered ot navigate your practice, with our support.

In 2026 we will be offering post graduate training and support to yoga teachers, or passionate students of yoga who wish to take a deeper dive into Ashtanga. Not the "how to" of fancy postures, yes we will explore the postures, but uniquely we will explore trauma informed Ashtanga, person centred yoga, having a holistic practice and a practice that is sustainable over a lifetime. You will have the opportunity to learn about the history, philosophy, chanting and Sanskrit count of Ashtanga Yoga. This will be alongside exploration on the role of the teacher in an Ashtanga class and how to support your students who experiencing physical and mental health challenges. This will be a supported space for refinement and collaboration. To teach Ashtanga yoga will need to already have a general foundational training and a sustained Ashtanga practice. However all are welcome to join to explore, and already experienced Ashtanga teachers will find this program sheds a new light on lineage, power dynamics and how to truly democratise the Ashtanga practice.
